HV RBERN Update

NYSED OBEWL has released this Guidance Document for the Provision of Services for ELL and World Languages Students During School Closures. The HV RBERN has scheduled a virtual meetup for this Monday, May 18, 2020, from 9:00 – 10:30 AM for district and school administrators and Bilingual/ENL program directors/coordinators to discuss the guidance and implications, and to share implementation ideas. Interested participants must register at this link in order to get the Zoom connection information.

As a reminder, the Hudson Valley Regional Bilingual Education Resource Network (HV RBERN) is gathering information about how we can support schools and educators on behalf of ELLs as we transition to summer and fall. Please complete this HV RBERN Regional Ongoing Support survey to inform our work. Please forward this survey to other educators in your district as well.

Annual Title III Immigrant Student Count for 2020-2021 ESSA Title III Allocations

NYSED
 has released the memo Immigrant Student Counts for 2020–21 ESSA Title III Immigrant Allocations to inform all LEAs to update and/or verify their counts of immigrant students in the Student Information Repository System (SIRS). NYSED will use these counts to calculate the allocations to LEAs for 2020-2021 ESSA Title III Immigrant funds.

LIU Hudson continues its highly successful online program to provide Childhood Education Certification to currently certified New York State ENL teachers. Their 7th Cohort of teachers will begin their program on June 24, 2020 and complete it in May 2021. Please view the following documents: a flyer about the program, an application, and a brief checklist of items needed for admission. In order to continue to be responsive, the Hudson Valley Regional Bilingual Education Resource Network (HV RBERN) is gathering information about how schools are planning for the future. Mercy College Clinically-Rich Intensive Teacher Institute for ESOL
Significantly Reduced Tuition for NYC DOE Teachers

Certified NYCDOE teachers can earn an additional NYS certificate in ESOL PreK-12 within one year and at a substantially reduced tuition rate. This clinically-rich program offers teachers a pathway to ESOL certification, with the goal of addressing the shortage of NYC teachers in English as a Second Language/English as a New Language. Professional Learning and Resources

SUNY New Paltz's TESOL program still has a few spots available in the Clinically Rich Intensive Teacher Institute beginning in August 2020. This Certificate of Advanced Study is designed for professionally certified teachers who are working full time in public schools in New York. The coursework consists of a sequence of 5 hybrid courses with online and some in-person (or Zoom) Saturday meetings and leads to New York teaching certification in ESOL. Because of grant support from NYSED, if the program is completed in its entirety, the full cost for teachers after reimbursement for the 15 graduate credits and certification recommendation to the state is $1,750. Because of COVID-19, the deadline has been extended until June 30th. New information and/or orientation sessions will be held later this spring/summer. Dates are TBA.
