About PR/HYLI

PR/HYLI stands for the Puerto Rican / Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute. Leading up to the statewide weekend Institute, 11th–12th grade students engage in training sessions at various higher education institutions to develop leadership, advocacy, public speaking, and essay-writing skills.

During the weekend Institute, students debate bills within the New York State Assembly Chambers while assuming the roles of NYS Legislators.

What are PR/HYLI’s goals?
  • Develop leadership skills in Latino/Hispanic youth
  • Create opportunities to interact with positive role models
  • Foster partnerships among educators, leaders, and students
  • Build deeper understanding of New York’s legislative process

Program Phases:

  • Legislative training
