This workshop will combine direct and indirect instructional practices that have been identified in research as effective for building student vocabulary in any content area. Participants will engage in learning why vocabulary development is critical, how to identify key vocabulary from your content and how to teach vocabulary using a variety of instructional routines. Students benefit from a consistent approach to vocabulary instruction, as part of your instructional routines, focusing on activities that foster listening, speaking, reading and writing in English.

Based on the success of the past four cohorts, they have extended the opportunity for ESOL certified teachers to earn a Childhood Education Certificate (Grades 1-6) through their NYSED-approved online advanced certificate program. SIFE Workshop Series

The Hudson Valley RBE-RN, in partnership with SupportEd, LLC, is excited to be offering the SIFE workshop series again this year. This series of five workshops is designed to help districts in planning and programming in support of Students with Interrupted Formal Education (SIFE). All five sessions will be offered at Rockland BOCES. Districts are encouraged to send a team to all 5 workshop sessions; teams may include, for example, ENL coordinators and educators, administrators, and guidance counselors and other support staff. Integral to these workshops is an online professional learning community in which series’ participants will collaborate with each other and the trainers as they develop district plans and supports. SIFE Session 5 – March 21, 2018: Supporting Students with Interrupted/Inconsistent Formal Education (SIFE): Strategies for Fostering Engagement and Achievement in Math

Hudson Valley RBE-RN Update

We have some important updates to share with you as we continue into the new school year.

Upcoming HV RBE-RN hosted workshops:

  1. Due to high demand, we are offering another session of the The ENL Teacher’s Tech Toolkit at Dutchess BOCES on Thursday, September 28th, 2017. This interactive and hands-on workshop introduces all educators to technology tools that can help enhance their ENL teaching practice. As with previous workshops, the day will be divided into two parts: an AM “Learn” session and a PM “Apply” session. Please note you must attend the AM “Learn” to be able to participate in the PM “Apply.” If you are interested, please visit the following links to register in MLP: AM Session and PM Session.
  2. We previously announced the upcoming workshop Dr. Kate Kinsella: Tools for Launching a School-Wide Academic Vocabulary Campaign on Thursday, December 14th, 2017. We’re pleased to announce that the location of this workshop is the Edith Macy Conference Center in Briarcliff Manor, NY.   3. Enhancing ENL Instructional Planning Using Targeted NYSESLAT Data at Southern Westchester BOCES on Monday, October 30th, 2017. Participants will analyze NYSESLAT modality data to purposefully target instruction across NYSESLAT proficiency levels. This workshop is intended for all teachers who work with ELLs and who utilize NYSESLAT data. Register in MLP here.
