This workshop will combine direct and indirect instructional practices that have been identified in research as effective for building student vocabulary in any content area. Participants will engage in learning why vocabulary development is critical, how to identify key vocabulary from your content and how to teach vocabulary using a variety of instructional routines. Students benefit from a consistent approach to vocabulary instruction, as part of your instructional routines, focusing on activities that foster listening, speaking, reading and writing in English.

Hudson Valley RBE-RN Update

Greetings!

Due to high demand, we are offering another session of "Planning for Instruction Using NYSESLAT Data" at Sullivan County BOCES on Tuesday, February 27th, 2018. Participants will analyze NYSESLAT modality data to purposefully target instruction across NYSESLAT proficiency levels. This workshop is intended for all teachers who work with ELLs and who utilize NYSESLAT data. Register in MLP here.

Furthermore, you may be interested in the recently released NYSED Guidance Document for Determining ELL/MLL Status of Supports for Students with DisabilitiesThis guidance document regarding Commissioner's Regulations Part 154.3 establishes criteria for whether a student with a disability is administered the NYSITELL (starts on p 1), provides details about the Language Proficiency Team (LPT) (pp 5-6) and criteria for exiting ELL/MLL students and ELL/MLL students with a disability from of ELL/MLL status (p 18).

Hudson Valley RBE-RN February Update

We are officially in the second half of the school year!

In the spirit of keeping you updated, we want to share links with you to recently released information regarding the 2018 NYSITELL, newly scheduled HV RBE-RN workshops (including another NYSITELL training at SW BOCES), and details regarding an informational session about the Intensive Teacher Institute in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at SUNY New Paltz.

Implementation of the 2018 Edition of the NYSITELL begins this week. NYS/OSA has added several documents to the website here to support districts with the transition to the new test. The website includes a memo regarding NYSITELL distribution and security, the Guide to the NYSITELL, FAQs, and a PowerPoint. Please contact us with any questions you may have.

Another session has been added for Training for Administration of Updated NYSITELL at Southern Westchester BOCES! 
Friday, February 9th, 2018, 9-12:00 PM
As a result of this ½ day training session, participants will learn about the changes to the NYSITELL, focusing on the changes in the test processing. This session is recommended for ENL teachers and coordinators, classroom teachers, and building and test administrators who want to learn more about the NYSITELL test processing and review administration practices. Those who will be administering the NYSITELL or who will have a role in any part of the test processing should attend a training session. Register in MLP here.

Our partners at SUNY New Paltz will be hosting two information sessions regarding their Intensive Teacher Institute in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages—one on February 12th and one on March 13th when prospective participants can learn more about the program and ask questions. The deadline for applications is April 15th, and the first class starts at the end of the summer on August 25th. There is a substantial subsidy in cost provided to teachers who complete the program. To view more details please view the program flyer here or visit their website.
