Early Childhood Education Conference: Our Diverse Classrooms

Please see the following from our colleagues at Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY:

We cordially invite you and your fellow colleagues to the seventh early childhood conference on September 23, 2017 at Manhattanville College, Purchase, NY. Our topic this year is Our Diverse Classrooms: Meaningful Approaches For Early Childhood.

Our country and our classrooms are increasingly more diverse. We work to create inclusive classrooms that support all our children including those who speak home languages other than English, come from varying cultural backgrounds and who have specific learning needs. How can we meaningfully support, and include all students in our classroom communities?

This year’s keynote speaker is María Paula Ghiso, PhD, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching at Teachers College, Columbia University. Dr. Ghiso will present her extensive and engaging research on working with young Emergent Bilinguals.

We will have many powerful workshops to choose from including:

  • Culturally Responsive Pedagogy
  • Storytelling with English Language Learners and Students with Special Needs
  • Diversity in Children's Literature
  • Supporting Young Children with Special Needs
  • Writing with Emergent Bilinguals

Language is nuanced, multi-modal and ever-changing. By language, we mean not just words but all the forms in which communication can be represented. In the 21st century innovative pedagogies impact the way we teach using various ways of accessing content that are reflected in multiliteracies. The Language Series 2017 will focus on teaching methods to better engage students in language and content development: not only digital technology but also explorations, music, sounds, block building, and others.
