Classrooms as Culturally Responsive Learning Communities

Participants will examine strategies and inclusive practices that foster cultural openness and provide students with healthy experiences of sociocultural integration.The activities included allow students to capitalize on their knowledge and heritage as they engage in the learning process and become members of classroom communities.

ELL Identification Process and Screening Interview - PARTS 1 and 2
This workshop is for district teams regarding the English Language Learner identification process from registration, to screenings (including the Language Proficiency Team and SIFE identification), through NYSITELL Administration, and student placement. Districts are encouraged to send teams to this workshop. PART 1 will focus on registration regulations related to the HLQ; registrar staff should attend this portion of the workshop. The remainder of the district teams should plan to attend the whole day, including the registration component, in order to ensure a clearly articulated district ELL identification process. During PART 2 of this workshop, district teams will work together to assemble screening interview kits appropriate to the various grade bands.

Two Summer Institutes, free of charge, for Teachers of World Languages
The Institutes will take place during the week of July 9th on from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm at New York University. If you are currently teaching World Languages you are eligible to apply for one of the two Institutes offered:

- Early Career Institute: 0-4 years of teaching (July 10, 11, 12) 
- Continuing Career Institute: 5+ years of teaching (July 12, 13)

  • Candidates are required to attend all days of the Institute in order to receive CTLE hours
  • Enrollment will be limited to the first 24 applicants who meet program eligibility and requirements
  • Lodging is not included. Breakfast will be provided.

WestEd, a non-profit educational research organization, is currently working on a number of research projects related to special education and the use of educational technology. Specifically, they are looking for child/parent pairs that meet the following criteria:

  • Children with special needs who are currently in 5-12th grade and who regularly uses text-to-speech technology at school or at home. Students who qualify include those with special needs such as visual impairment, cerebral palsy, and more.
  • Families who are fluent in English, but where a different language is spoken at home. One of the following languages are preferred: Spanish, Mandarin, or a language spoken in India.

Students and parents must be able to participate in a video call session, and families will receive $150 for the 1.5-hour session.
