This course will provide essential tools for communicating with Spanish-speaking students, parents, and school personnel regarding aspects of school life and education which are mostly used to communicate with Spanish-speaking students and their parents. The communicative approach of the course focuses on developing communicative competence. Participants will start speaking from day one, and get personalized feedback by submitting audio recordings and attending optional office hours.

This first level, Newcomers course, is for participants who do not have any proficiency to communicate in Spanish. There will be nineteen (19) Wednesday sessions: 4-5 PM with "optional" individualized "office hours" following each session from 5-6:15 PM. Each completed session will award 1 CTLE credit to each participant. Attending each session is highly recommended but not mandatory.

Examples of content to be covered:

• Greeting, introduction, and farewell expressions

• Information parents need to enroll their children in school; talking about age; school personnel

• Family; capitals in South and Central America

• In the cafeteria; food

• Days, months, dates, holidays

• Colors, curriculum, weather

• Enlisting parents' support (This will be mentioned briefly in the first session but covered in more detail towards the end of the course.)
