Instruction in the 5 pillars of reading is necessary—but not sufficient—for teaching English language learners to read and write proficiently in English.

In this workshop, participants will examine:

-What is different about teaching the key components of reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension) to ELLs 
-How to create opportunities to develop oral language 
-Strategies for before, during and after reading supports 
-Cross-linguistic relationships in second-language learners and the sociocultural contexts for literacy development
