[HVRBERN-CTLE ID #23120] Pre-Referral Considerations for English Language Learners) - at Sullivan County BOCES

  • Sullivan County BOCES, Conference Room #4 6 Wierk Avenue Liberty, NY, 12754 United States (map)

A challenge faced by educators when teaching English Language Learners is knowing whether a student’s academic struggle is due to the typical process of acquiring a new language or to something more intrinsic, such as a disability. When learning a new language, individuals might display certain behaviors that can be mistaken for a disability because of their similar characteristics and educators must exercise caution when making decisions about referrals for special education. This workshop will invite participants to examine the behaviors associated with new language acquisition as well as clinical markers of a disability. We will identify factors that must be considered prior to referring an ELL student for an evaluation. Educators will engage in case study discussions to consider how languages, culture, social-emotional dynamics and academics interact and impact student achievement.
