2019 PR/HYLI Application Released

The Hudson Valley RBERN invites you to nominate students in grades 11 and 12 to participate in the 29th Angelo Del Toro Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute (PR/HYLI). The student application can be found here or at this link:

PR/HYLI is sponsored by the New York State Puerto Rican Hispanic Task Force and the New York State Education Department. PR/HYLI participants develop leadership skills. They also have the opportunity to interact with positive role models such as Puerto Rican/Latino elected officials, educators, and business leaders, and develop in-depth knowledge of the state legislative process.

Last year, 70+ students from the Hudson Valley participated in the training sessions. From that group, nearly 50 high-achieving high school Latino students represented the Hudson Valley delegation at the statewide Institute weekend in Albany. The Hudson Valley delegation was the 2nd largest in the state and brought home $3,650 worth of scholarships.

This year’s Institute is scheduled for March 9-11, 2019. During the three-day Institute in Albany, selected students participate in leadership activities, network with high school students from across New York State, participate in a mock assembly, interact with legislators and attend a Student Recognition Dinner.

In preparation for the Institute, a local training program will be conducted by the Hudson Valley RBERN from November of 2018 to March of 2019 at Vassar College and Manhattanville College (a schedule is within the application).

Expectations for attendees:

  • To participate in the PR/HYLI training sessions and the weekend Institute, all students must be accompanied by a district a chaperone/liaison who will also assist in the training sessions.

  • Face-to-face training sessions take place from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM. Due to training requirements, we will only accept and retain students who commit to attend the entirety of each training session.

Completed student applications MUST be postmarked by Thursday, November 1, 2018. All materials must be mailed to: HV RBERN PR/HYLI, 450 Mamaroneck Avenue, 3rd Floor, Harrison, NY 10528.

To assist your district with recruitment for this activity, please find a flyer in both English and Spanish for students interested in PR/HYLI.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email José M. Meléndez, Resource Specialist and PR/HYLI Trainer at jmelendez@swboces.org or Gregory Bailey, Technology Resource Specialist and PR/HYLI Trainer at gbailey@swboces.org.

HV RBERN New Workshop And Partner Events

We hope your school year is off to an incredible start!

In order to better serve our region, the NYS Hudson Valley Regional Bilingual Education Resource Network (HV RBERN) is gathering data to inform our grant-funded professional development initiatives.

We kindly request that you take a moment to complete this short survey (https://goo.gl/forms/996x3ZWLZqNYRb8v1). Our intent is to gauge your professional development needs as they relate to supporting English Language Learners (ELLs) in our region. In addition, if you received HV RBERN support or attended our workshops during the 2017-2018 school year, we ask that you please rate your level of satisfaction with the HV RBERN, as well as provide feedback on our performance. (If you completed the survey in June or over the 2018 summer, thank you! This is the same survey you completed previously.)

Your responses will assist us in providing better services to meet your needs. Please feel free to forward this survey to other educators in your district. We appreciate your assistance!
